Willits Urban Forest Management Plan
The City of Willits’ Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) will help provide the City with an avenue to plan for the future of its trees. Dudek used a comprehensive approach to address issues associated with deferred maintenance, declining tree health, species diversity, wildfire threats, and predicted changes to weather and climate to develop the City’s UFMP.
Project Facts
- Prepared for the City of Willits
- Mendocino County, CA
- 3-square-mile area
- Accomplished with CAL FIRE grant

The Challenge
The City of Willits is a small rural city in Northern California with a small urban forestry budget and few urban forest staffing resources. In 2021, the City received a CAL FIRE grant to conduct a tree inventory and complete UFMP containing goals, objectives, actions, and a monitoring plan for preserving and enhancing the City’s urban forest for the next 50 years.

The Solution
Dudek’s urban foresters conducted a tree inventory and canopy cover study, as well as analyzed the status of the urban forest, budget and staffing resources, and current municipal codes and ordinances. Our team also provided community and stakeholder outreach, hosting virtual public meetings, conducting interviews with City staff, community members, and Caltrans.

The Impact
The UFMP will enable the City to better plan for the future of its trees and address issues associated with deferred maintenance, declining tree health, species diversity, wildfire threats, and predicted changes to weather and climate.
What We Did

Next Project
Temecula Urban Forest Management Plan
The Temecula Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) will help to move the City of Temecula toward a more sustainable urban forest. Dudek applied sustainable urban forest management practices and concepts to our analysis to develop a long-term plan for sustainable management and maintenance of the City’s trees.
