Temecula Urban Forest Management Plan
The Temecula Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) will help to move the City of Temecula toward a more sustainable urban forest. Dudek applied sustainable urban forest management practices and concepts to our analysis to develop a long-term plan for sustainable management and maintenance of the City’s trees.
Project Facts
- Prepared for the City of Temecula
- Riverside County, CA
- 30-square-mile area
- Robust community outreach component
- Hosted citywide Urban Forest Summit

The Challenge
The City and its residents have noted existing tree and infrastructure conflicts and the potential for future conflicts due to many young trees in the City that are planted with limited growing space. Planting the right tree in the right place is critical for the success of Temecula’s urban forest. Dudek was tasked with providing urban forest management planning services, recommending improvements to the City’s urban forest program, and ensuring best management practices are being implemented.

The Solution
Dudek is preparing an analysis of the existing tree inventory, canopy cover, management and maintenance practices, program funding, and city planning documents and procedures. The Temecula UFMP will also include a street tree master plan, which analyzes planter widths throughout the City and prescribes recommended tree species based on the available planting space.
The project includes extensive community engagement, including an online survey, a project website, tabling at local events, educational materials for residents, business owners, and landscape professionals, as well as an Urban Forest Summit on the state of the City’s trees.

The Impact
The Temecula UFMP will include a strategic plan, implementation plan, and monitoring plan, which the City can use to improve its urban forest program and ensure sustainable urban forest practices are being used.
By ensuring Temecula’s urban forest is appropriately managed and maintained, and community members are involved and educated on best management practices, the City can achieve a sustainable, equitable, and resilient urban forest that provides environmental benefits and services for generations to come.
